Ready, set, go! Summer has come and gone, It's time to send the kids back to school. Some kids can have a tough time transitioning back to school. Others, return to school like they never left without any problem. Don't be concerned if your child feels a little nervous about starting school, after all, they are entering into a new classroom, with a new teacher and new classmates. The emotions may be two-fold; fear of the unknown and butterflies of excitement. Have no worries, they will become used to the school routine and schedule in no time. If you find after a few weeks that your child is not settling in and continues to be anxious about coming to school, please communicate this to your child's teacher, the adjustment counselor or the school nurse. Here are some "Back to School" tips to enhance your child's educational success:
- Make sure immunizations and the most recent physical exam are up-to-date and send a copy to the school nurse.
- Review basic hygiene tips, especially hand washing, to prevent your child from getting and spreading germs.
- Get enough sleep by establishing a reasonable bedtime and wake-up time.
- Develop a routine for homework and after school activities.
- Eat breakfast every morning. Pack them a healthful snack and lunch.
- Keep an open line of communication with your child.
- Notify the school nurse with any changes in your child's medical history. For example; "Did they get glasses over the summer?"
- If your child is starting a new school, contact the school before the first day and arrange a visit.
